The first edition of Violinetta® takes its name from its designer, who in choosing her own name wanted to pay homage to Biancamaria Visconti, Duchess of Milan, born exactly 600 years ago on March 31, 1425.
Biancamaria, the only daughter of the Duke of Milan, is perhaps the most important woman in the history of Cremona, where in 1441 she married the condottiero Francesco Sforza at the Abbey of San Sigismondo, later becoming in 1450 Duchess of Milan.
Known for her sweetness and kindness, but also for her courage and ardor, intelligent, cultured, and resolute; the episode from the spring of 1484 remains famous, when Cremona was besieged by the Venetians, who had been bombarding it for days and it was close to surrender; Francesco Sforza was in Milan, engaged in the defense of the city, so it fell to Biancamaria to command the military operations to defend against the imminent attack; the people of Cremona, aware of the terrible moment, feared defeat, surrender and looting, the burning and ruin of Cremona.
Bianca Maria Visconti furious and daring, but cold and clear-headed, broke the deadlock and entered the hall of her manor where the weapons and armor were kept; she took from its case her damascened armor, made of precious burnished steel from Lumezzane, given to her by her husband, and mounting her horse, left her castle at the head of her loyal men-at-arms; arriving at the bridge of Cremona, with great skill she hurled a spear that struck and killed a Venetian soldier.
The Cremonese soldiers, exhausted by the siege, greatly outnumbered and outgunned, but encouraged by the gesture of their Lady, threw themselves into battle, and fighting heroically, defeated the enemy army, then set fire to the Venetian fleet anchored on the Po; Biancamaria's act of love and courage saved the city from looting, and history turned her into a legend.
The colors of the first edition of Violinetta evoke those of the altarpiece of the Abbey of San Sigismondo, where the wedding took place; the designer's logo is also inspired by the autograph signature of Biancamaria Visconti, Duchess of Milan, a warrior for the love of the city she loved, Cremona, which forever recognized her as its Lady.
